Please Help Collection Check

Hi im new to this i recently received a check from a collection that i sent money to i ask them to validate the account and they couldnt so they sent my money back . to make a long story short i would like to know is it safe to deposit the check from the collection agency into my bank account or should i just get it cashed elsewhere and also if i deposit it can they comeback later and withdraw from my account
