I currently have a bank account at Charter One bank that I opened when I turned 18 about 7 years ago. I also got approved for a credit line for $500 dollars at the time for overdraft protection.
I want to close this account because I don't use it anymore and they came out with new policies that will charge me fees per month. Anyone know if it's possible to close an account but leave the credit line open? I would really like to leave it open because it is my 2nd oldest account and there are no fees associated with it as long as i dont use it.
If you close that account today, it will continue to report positively on your CR for 10 more years. During this time span, your other credit accounts will have time to grow.
You will probably need to call the bank to see if they can leave the line of credit open but I don't think it should hurt you if you close it. That is of course assuming that you have a nice cushion of available credit so that the $500 does not hurt your utilization.
I currently have:
Capital One (my first card) at a $500 limit which will probably never grow
Chase Freedrom - $3k CL
Amazon Store card - $900 CL
Charter One credit line - $500
And two other cards that dont count toward my util (Amex Zync w/ NPSL and a Macys card)
So I'm at $4900 with about 1500 divided among my revolving cards
