This is the thing ................

My fiancee is 29 years old and never had a credit card. We got him the CJ and (Rewards 660) blah, but had to start somewhere. We're waiting the 6 months for a fico score to be calculated and need help in deciding what next step to take. Any suggestions?

Starting Score: 1/2011 TU 539 EQ 481

I think it depends a bit.

Does he have bad credit? Does he have any bills or collections related to anything else or does he just have NO credit at all?

Current Score: TU- 723, EQ- 747, EX- 737

Re: This is the thing ................

From your post, I am going to assume that he had no credit at all.

If this is the case, what is his ultimate goal and when?

Is he looking to purchase a house, a car, etc? And when?

If he is looking to add certain CC's, I would add them within the 1st year of credit, this allows all accounts to age together and adding accounts at this point doesn't affect your average age that much.

NO credit at all. We are looking to be married in the next couple of years and want to have a house, nice car etc. with good interest rates. I'm working on rebuilding mine and he needs to establish. After being on this forum, I see that he needs to have a perfect mix.

Re: This is the thing ................

Go on a slow but steady app spree. You can also make him an AU on your cards to help him get credit of his own before you apply for any more under his name.

Re: This is the thing ................

Has he contacted his bank and asked them for a CC? Account history with a given bank is almost as important as a credit score.

Yes, we are going to get a cd from our cu and borrow against it to establish some credit together. Guess we will also get a cc with them as well.
