Credit repair organizations can do most of what a consumer can do as their assigned agent. They can contact a credtior or debt collector and ask for their good-will deltion of reporting, they can assist you in disputing the accuracy of reporting, they can assist in negotiations, etc. Most of which a consumer can do themselves if they have some knowledge of the process.
What they cant do is to promise results that are beyond their authority to obtain. If they promise deletion of reporting, that is usually a huge red flag.
Credit repair organizations do have one statututory exclusion. While they can represent you in disputes made via a CRA, if they file a direct dispute on your behalf, or there is even evidence that they have assisted you in the preparation of a direct dispute, the direct dispute can be dismissed without any investigation as "frivolous or irrelevant."
If your credit repair will involve disputes of accuracy of reporting, then they could be an impediment.
