Why would an inquiry increase my score?

Just received a score alert that my fico increased by 7 points because of an inquiry. I thought inquries cost you points?

Random fluctuation?

And is this asingle inq with no others on the report?  Or is it the 42nd one this year  Smiley Happy

And did they pull EQ?
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Re: Why would an inquiry increase my score?

This was an inquiry from HSBC Nevada for Gateway Computers that I posted about a few days ago. I couldn't answer their dumb security questions so they said they will let me know in 7-10 days if I am approved. The Gateway rep told me that this usually means a decline. I have 2 inquries from 2 weeks ago that caused my score to drop 19 points, so this is the 3rd inquiry in a month. Yes, they pulled Equifax.
