unverfied debt

Recently i pulled my credit report which showed a debt to an apartment complex i co-signed on. the debt was generated back in 2/05. In researching this item i found that the collection company listing the item is not willing to provide me any information on the OC and is refusing to negotiate a settlement. So i did some leg work and went to the the OC (the apartment complex) to try to negotiate a settlement. It turns out that the OC has no record of this account and is unable to verify the debt, upon talking to the complex manager i found out that this complex has gone through 4 different management companies since the debt was reported. I called all the managements company with no luck on verification. The account was disputed with all 3 credit reporting agencies and they all came back as being verified. That was before I found out the the OC had no record. So im not sure which way to proceed on this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
