Keep in mind that homeowner's policies cover more than just the dwelling:
- Liability
- Loss Of Use (paying for a temporary dwelling if you can't use your home)
- Personal Property
And where you live greatly affects the premium (i.e. whether your state has tort reform, distance from fire station, distance from fire hydrants, etc.).
I agree with Stan on this . Here is the coverage I have with a 1% deductible. My premium last year was $1,400.

I guess I will not complain. Here is ours:
Policy Coverage’s Protection Limit
Dwelling Structure $ 330,000.00
Extended Reimbursement Limits 50%
Other Structures $ 33,000.00
Personal Property Protection $ 231,000.00
Family Liability (each occurrence) $ 300,000.00
Guest Medical $ 5,000.00
Loss of Use $ 66,000.00
Deductibles Applicable ($ 1,000.00)
Total Annual Premium $ 796.00
We are also getting a decent sized umbrella policy, but that is separate.
Thanks for everyone taking the time to dig out their policies to tell me their coverage.
I dug mine out, too. (I know I should have already looked).
They let me know that I did not get the best rates based on my TU Score - so free TU report is going to be ordered.
Dwelling: 200,000
Other structures: 20,000 (WHAT IS THIS? GARAGE?)
Personal Property 100,000
Loss of use 60,000
Personal liability (Bodily injury and property damage) each occurance 300,000
Medical payments to others each person 2,000 ----------See now this is where it's stupid. If the dog bites someone then 2K isn't much and I could pay that myself if I had to and get the cheaper insurance - going to call the ins. guy Monday on this --- Would "Personal liability" also factor in to offset?
Deductible: 500

Until I saw this I was going to apologize to you for being one of the thread jackers!! This thread has drifted drastically from talking about bi-weekly mortgage payments.

I love a good tangent!

I'm only a renter (waiting to find a good deal to make my first purchase), but I think I understand the medical payments vs. personal liability issue after asking the question 20 different ways. Basically, your policy pays out the medical payments and then (if there is additional liability) the personal liability would pay the rest of the claim.
From my memory of quoting out policies for my parents, other structures includes garages, sheds, etc. that are not part of the house. Also, this coverage is usually a standard percentage of the dwelling coverage for each insurer.
Thanks, Stan. I feel ok w/ this entire insurance thing now. It is what it is. Maybe when my score gets better it will go down. Boy I'd have given ANYTHING for a 730 dollar a year ins. policy when I was a renter - I need to keep remembering how lucky I am to be a homeowner after all!

I just got one from Nationwide, too! They want like $349 to " process" the set up! I threw it away immediately. I plan to take my bonus every Dec to make an extra payment. By the way, Nationwide just got my mortgage and they sent me a letter saying that they don't report on Credit reports. What's up with that?
Nationwide the ins. company? or Nationwide the loan company?
Oh sorry - Nationwide the bimonthly mortgage payment letter people? I forgot this thread was initially about that. Yep that's what Walt found out for me - hidden up front fees. Rip Off!
