Is the Earnest money considered an asset?

The underwriter has recently asked for us to show that we have enough money as assets put up to secure our loan. Currently we have 9000 plus 500 from our checking account and 20000 in gifts from family but we haven't gotten the gift form yet. We had more put up but we put 1000 for th Earnest deposit and we paid for the appraisial and the inspection.

My question is about the Earnest money. Is it considered an asset by an underwriter?

Yes. I think by assets they mean funds required for the downpayment. So in this case, yes, the earnest money offsets the downpayment.
