Does it hurt if you close a few credit card accounts? Keep the oldest one open? These are mostly store cards.

It will affect your utilization if you have balances on cc's and you close out the zero balance accounts. It is better to get your loan and close before you start closing accounts.

Closing them will not help your chances -

it will not help but it could hurt since you will have a limited number of open tradelines
