Secured credit cards

Good morning,

To anyone, will applying for secured credit cards help my increase my credit score?  I have student loans that I am paying on time monthly but not credit cards or car payments.  I have some old some credit debt, about $1,500, that will be paid by the end of September. I want to pre-qualify for a mortgage by next year.

Re: Secured credit cards

I went with a $1,000 secured card through BoA in April and my score has increased by about 50 points across the board.

Cards in my wallet: BofA 1-2-3 Rewards - $3,000 (5/2012), Walmart - $350 (9/2012), Home Depot - $500 (10/2012), US Bank - $1,000 (11/2012)
