Call to Loss & Mitigation. Ask them what their procedure is. Be prepared with your documentation; Hardship letter, paycheck stubs, bank statements, household budget,etc. You have mailed your hardship letter -but get a fax no. Once you do that, you need to keep calling them.
I have a similiar situation w/Chase only it was their solution to error they made with property tax payments. I am never late on my mortgage. But the loan modification process is not quick and many of the lenders are not prepared for the number of inquiries.
