It depends. Can you post the GFE?
Our original GFE was around $6400 for a $68xxx home. We're closing tomorrow and the check we're writing for closing has come down to $2800. There were some things that we paid before closing that helped to bring down that final number. We paid a year of home owners insurance, in full, directly to our insurance company (which saved us 15%), so approximately $800 came off the top of the original GFE. We paid for the appraisal early (which I've heard is normal- you pay for the appraisal before they'll even come out), and that took another $400 off. We negotiated a few items on the GFE and wound up with a generous $800 credit.
Our GFE was based on "worst case scenario" so if there was any change, it would only go lower. Ask your loan officer about everything on the estimate. Have them walk you through every line item and ask questions. It's your money and you have the right to know where each dollar is going.
I recommend posting your GFE here so the members can take a look to see if you're paying any ridiculous fees.
Good luck!
+1. We had to shop until we found a lender with fees that worked
Are you doing FHA? If so inquire about the $100 downpayment if that interests you. Good luck dealing with HUD, they can be a nightmare! They are good at getting paperwork back quickly but have some crazy policies that make your life difficult, especiacally with the inspection.
That sounds about right to me - Did you ask the sellers to pay any closing costs?
