29, M. Very irresponsible up to until 2 years ago. Had 0 then. Now I have 10k in savings ( saving for downpayment) 6k in 401k and a nice job in Pharma industry. Also, credit score jumped from 595 to currently 662 and rising in that time period. Only debt is 7k remaining on auto loan. I was not doing well 2 years ago but now I can see the light. Feels great, only wish I started sooner. Better late than never!
I took the long way through school and am paying for it now.
38 years old
$140,000 student loan debt
$20,000 savings (approximately 10 months worth at my current income & expenditure rate)
$15,000 retirement
My net worth is going to be negative for several more years until the student loans get taken care of. The way I figure it, my only real options on that front are to enroll in a government-sponsored program that pays off big chunks of student loans or work at a non-profit for 10 years to take advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

I haven't read all 11 pages here. My take is savings is always good but, bank account savings is akin to stuffing your mattress. Bank savings earnings are in decimal points, if any, unless you start with $25K or tie the money up in a CD for years. I'm older and haven't had a savings account since about last century. However, I do have liquid assets in brokerage accounts that I could drain if the necessity arose and credit cards with single digit interest rates. Just hoping I never have to disturb them due to emergency.
Yea i used to have a chuck schwab check card linked to my broker account to avoid fees on overseas atm withdrawls. Need to get this card back and fund my account again.
24 year old male:
$1,000 in an emergency fund
$7,000 in 401K
$1,000 in HSA
$700 in a plain old savings account at my credit union. (Goal is $10,000 by year end)
Only debt is $20,000 in student loans
I am participating in the Mega Money Challenge this year to really bump by personal savings account. If anyone is interested:http://www.savingadvice.com/articles/2014/01/08/1020077_52-week-mega-money-challenge.html
24 - M
Roughly $65k in liquid.
Less than $20k in debt across all installment loans summed up.
No CC debt.

This is a great thread and thanks 800 for starting this. I'm certainly going to read through it all tonight. But to answer your question:
32M
Savings- $6K Larger Emergency, $1K Smaller Emergency (for more petty stuff) and $8K in a general. No retirement. (I had maxed out my first year of my IRA but lost 10% because of the market tanking and foolishly took it out because I was losing money while still having debt. I actually came to the finance section to see if it's a good time to get back into investing and found your thread!)
Goal: Get up to $10K in general and then invest and simultaneously continue to attack my SL debt and pay for a wedding we have upcoming in Nov. of 2017.
