PNC Virtual Wallet

Hello again everyone!

Decided to close my bank accounts with Chase and I'm in the process of getting started with PNC's Virtual Wallet. From what I've seen online, they have lots of very cool budgeting and money tracking features while having a great looking UI for their online banking. While Chase had one of the best mobile banking apps around, the PNC Virtual Wallet mobile app looks extremely promising as well. Chase's actual online web-banking UI was lackluster while offering no additional features so, being a huge tech enthusiast I'm very excited to see what I can do with PNC's Virtual Wallet in order to have my money organized in one UI.

Anyone have any reviews or thoughs on this PNC product? Love it, hate it - I would love to know. Chase also hasn't really done anything for me in order to really start or grow a relationship with them so, I won't really lose any benefits by switching.

Re: PNC Virtual Wallet

I banked withi PNC for about 2 years. Their website and app are really good and the Virtual Wallet has some great tools.

I didn't have any issues with PNC until something went wrong and it just seemed like it was a neverending comedy of errors.

My college aged daughter and I had linked accounts so I could monitor her accounts. Her debit card was compromised somehow and they cancelled it on her. Unfortunately that left her stranded at school in Philadelphia while I was in NJ. The local branch would not allow her to withdraw cash as she had a non working card and did not have checks. They told her she had to go to the branch her account was opened at in NJ. I even called them to at least let her have $40 out of her account to no avail. So I had to to go the branch myself in an attempt to get whatever the issue was straightened out. I was not amused as I had just given birth 5 days earlier and had no business being anywhere except for home. Fortunately the branch manager had mercy on an irate hormonal woman and got a short term solution worked out. They do not issue temporary cards just so you know.

Fast forward a year and the now 1 year old gets ahold of my debit card and hides it somewhere. I looked everywhere and could not find it. So I called customer service and request a new card. They said no problem 7-10 days and it would be here. I figure no worries as I can work off my college daughter's card since I can transfer funds to her. We went to Target and in the checkout line we discover  PNC cancelled her card as well, so I pay with a credit card and we go to the branch at the supermarket next door. The banker says I have to call the 800# and let's me use their phone. I can't identify any individual transactions because my phone died and I can't access the app. They tell me that I have to have the banker check my ID and confirm that I am who I say I am. I have to wait because the banker is busy but he answers the silly questions from the 800# rep. I am informed that a mistake was made and that we will both be receiving new cards within 7-10 days and I should withdraw cash and write checks in the meantime.

7 days pass, daughter gets replacement card. I get nothing. I call customer service and am told to call back in a few days. I wait a few more days, still no card. I call again and am informed that a new card was never issued. I go ballistic and ask that a card be overnighted. I am informed that I would be charged $35 for that "courtesy" but perhaps the branch manager could waive the fee. So I stop by the branch and the manager says she can't waive the fee but can have the card delivered to the branch faster than it would reach me. Seeing no other option I accept. I call on Day 5, no card. Day 7, still no card. It's a bank holiday so I call on Day 10 and my card is there so I go pick it up. The rep asks me why I left it there so long as it had been there almost a week.

Fast forward a few months and my uncle's estate is distributing some significant assets and would like to wire the money. I call the 800# and ask about wire instructions and am told my account isn't qualified for sending wires. I tell them I want to receive one and I need the bank info. They say they will call me back or I can go to the branch. After that I just opened an account with the local credit union which is no frills but bent over backwards with the wire transfer. Even closing my account at PNC was screwed up. I went to a branch as advised, said I wanted to close all 3 of my individual accounts. He puts the request in and I left. Apparently it was incorrect so only one account was closed not all three and they charged me $20 in fees so I had to go back. My issues must have been escalated up the food chain because some senior account resolution specialist and I played phone tag for about a month. In the end I just said I didn't have time for the nonsense any longer. While I still have my local credit union account, I was able to join Navy Fed which is 1000x more awesome than any other bank I've been with.

If you are looking for a good money management/account management tool you should check out Mint.com. I recently started using it and like it a lot. The app is pretty basic but does the job, the website is much more robust.

Re: PNC Virtual Wallet

I worked for PNC for about 5 years and still have my virtual wallet. I do love the online system and the perks you get with the account are great if you have the Performance or Performance Select version. I especially like the ATM reimbursement, you never have to worry about what ATM you are using. You can get some good deals with their offers as well, similar to a credit card.

The only thing I would say is it is a large bank still, and local management has next to no discretion. Everything is very black and white, which is fine for most people. Just don't expect them to waive many fees, or work with you much. Otherwise service is great and is very closely monitored through surveys conducted by Gallup. Every Friday the branch will receive scores for the prior week. Gallup calls customers within 2 days of visiting the branch and will ask them to rate their experience. All staff receive incentive based on the scores, for managers its up for $2k per quarter and factors into their year end bonus as well.

The bankers are also well trained in all aspects, and will try to sell you on additional prodcuts - but this is expected anymore.

I am now a manager at a family owened community bank in Chicago and I can say for the customer is is much friendlier. Obviously a community bank will not have the latest technology, but they usually are not too far behind. We know we have to invest in tech to draw in customers anymore. My bank actually has the exact same app as PNC - our online banking provider is the same company.

Re: PNC Virtual Wallet

Thank you both for the insight. Once I get fully setup with PNC and start using their Virtual Wallet tools - I'll be able to tell if I truly made the right decision in leaving Chase Bank. Seems like all banks have their ups and downs and unfortunately the CU's in my area really aren't that great (limited locations, limited ATM access with no reimbursement for using non-CU ATM's, odd branch hours, and poor product selection). I really do enjoy the bells and whistles some of the big banks have to offer and online tools are a huge bonus for me as I utilize them heavily. Hopefully I'll have good customer services experiences with PNC, or better yet never have a situation happen where I'll need to contact customer service.

I'm hoping this can grow into a good banking relationship. I do have the Performance Spend version of Virtual Wallet so, I get Non-PNC ATM reimbursements which is wonderful - and there are plenty of PNC branches in my area. I also like the fact that I can get extra rewards from normal everyday spending - or even better rewards from their credit cards.

We shall see how it goes... Smiley Happy

Re: PNC Virtual Wallet

I love my Virtual Wallet. I have the Performance Select account, and have gotten pretty good customer service. If I message them on Facebook I get prompt replies or callbacks. Phone people are always super friendly, but sometimes misinformed, it seems. Either which way, I do think they try are customer service oriented. People at the branch have always been awesome. The website loads slower, but it is loading a ton of things. The app is great. I feel like they are always making room for improvements.

I have never been in a position to have to ask them to waive fees, and such, so I can't comment on how strict they are.

Personally, I dont like PNC. If Im not in central PA, I won't use them for sure. Their phone banking is horrible, average waiting time is at least 30 minutes, I maintain my account balance at high six low seven figures but they refuse to offer me a personal banker. Chase would give you a personal banker for only 250k. I dont recommend PNC.

Zach, that is rediculous. If that's what they're doing for their high net worth clients, I imagine they will feel the effects of losing clients like you in the future. For **bleep**s and giggles, why not move 250k to CPC or Merrill? That's bound to worry a branch manager. Explain the **bleep** service you've been receiving and tell him/her that if CPC/ML/whoever pans out that you'll be moving the remainder of your assets over. Maybe they think because you keep taking the poor service, that they don't need to offer you additional services.

Footnote: Chase always treated me well with nothing like that in their accounts. I had PNC before Chase for about 2 years and it was fine but they kept adjusting my account and the threshholds to avoid fees. I did end up switching to Charles Schwab/Discover/ and my CU.
