So today I decided to call up AT&T to see if I could get a discount. I verified that all four lines were no longer in contract and asked her if there would be any fee for cancelling service. Of course she began asking me why I wanted to cancel. I told her that the service is great but paying $200/mth for 4 lines (two of which don't have data) is way too much and I think that I can get a much better deal with Verizon. She changed my plan to have unlimited minutes, text, shared 10g of data (for all 4 lines) and lowered my bill by $50/mth. Then she added a $30 credit to my account. I think this is pretty interesting because a few months ago (when I was still under contract) I called to see if there were any better deals and was told no, that they couldn't reduce my bill unless I chose a lesser plan.
Then I decided to try my luck with Time Warner. I told them I was thinking of switching to Windstream because my internet speeds are too slow and they gave me some free HD channels, doubled my internet speed, and reduced my bill by $25/mth.
I'm going to push my luck later and call my landlord (who is my big brother) and ask him for a discount on rent!
Update: My brother gave me a $5/mth discount on my rent because I begged him. I'll take it! HAHAHA
Good for you. I left AT&T last year bc they're so expensive and the quality of their service is nothing special. I'm now with T-Mobile and pay $100/mo for 4 lines with unlimited minutes, texting and data. The only caveat is that the first 10 GB of data (2.5 GB for each phone) are at high speed and then it slows down but I never affects me as I never go over 2 GB. Also, when I travel overseas, texting and data are totally free and calls are only $0.20/min.
I also called xfinity and changed my internet plan of 3 Mbps for $29.88 to 25 Mbps for $19.99! It doesn't cost anything to call and ask!!!
No hard inquiries in the process for any of you, I hope!
The 2.5 GB at T-Mobile is great, although promotional.

Dang it! Now I feel like I am still overpaying. I am getting the same plan for $150! But TMobile doesn't have great service where I live so it may be worth the money to stick with AT&T.

Neither company mentioned anything about checking my credit, and I haven't gotten any alerts for a new inquiry so I think I am safe.
Hello, ex-AT&T and current Xfinity employee here.
Calling up and directly asking for either companies 'retention department' will get you results.
Both have greater discount codes than retail or CS.
Hope this helps.
We switched to Republic Wireless a while back, and couldn't be happier. Although we both love technology cell phones are not high priority for us. Since we have an HTPC the only thing we have with Time Warner is internet, which is $39.99/month. Still too expensive, IMO!

True Dat!
I did exactly that with DirecTv. Promos ended and my bill jumped to $105/month, more than I wanted to pay. Called them up, asked specifically for "retenion specialist". Now, a trick here is to be very friendly, tell them you enjoy the service, but that the cost is too much, and that you're considering alternatives. If they ask what alternatives, tell them Hulu Plus or Netflix or something like that, where the cost is significantly lower. The retention specialist in my case "rewarded" me for being a loyal customer and was able to figure out ways to get my bill down from $105/mo to $74/mo for the same package and equipment. This was for another 12 month commitment, which I was willing to make, as I'm happy with the product, just not the price!
