Western FCU changing name to Unify Financial Credit Union

FYI:  Western Federal Credit Union is changing their name to Unify Financial Credit Union (I also received a mailed notice of the name change in the mail just yesterday).

I'm not a member, but I think I'm with you... for purely aesthetic purposes, I think I prefer the old name myself.  Smiley Very Happy

Several regional banks in my 'neck of the woods' did the same once they decided to move beyond their traditional footprint.  "Central Bank of the South" became "Compass Bank", now loved and cherished (LOL) as "BBVA Compass Bank", and "First Alabama Bank" became "Regions Bank".  Both also bought up other banks as well.

I can see how Western might think they were limiting themselves with their name, but to me it sounds 'classic' no matter where they are located or who they serve.  I'm sure they paid folks some big bucks to determine that I'm mistaken, though... haha.  Smiley Very Happy

Don't know why I'm weighing in either since I'm also not a member, but what bugs me about the new name is that it's "Unify" instead of "Unity." Verbs just don't work well in business titles IMO...it feels like they're making a command/request. "Fine, fine, I'll try to unify the federal credit union." Smiley Frustrated

Yeah but Compass Bank is all over the place and the few times I've dealt with them as a bank has been legit; Western FCU, well, they aren't that highly regarded around here (live about 25 minutes away from their corporate HQ).

A CU that offers Payday Loans, awesome!

I wonder why the word FEDERAL  was dropped.  Isn't there some significance to that term in the name of credit unions.

Re: Western FCU changing name to Unify Financial Credit Union

I don't know much about Western/Unify, but I would suspect the change to "financial credit union" vs. "federal" might have to do with a change in their charter.

For example, Robins Federal Credit Union in Georgia changed from a federal charter to a state charter this year so that they could more easily expand their field of membership.  They had to remove the word "federal" from their name when doing so, so that CU is now known as Robins Financial Credit Union.   (source: http://www.macon.com/news/business/article48880150.html - and a family member who works for that CU!)

Current scores high 600s on EX/EQ/TU.

Amex Platinum NPSL - NFCU Platinum $17,900 - Chase Ritz $14,000 - PenFed Promise $5000 - Synchrony PayPal MC $5000 - Barclay AA $4000 - Merrick Bank $2400 - USAA Amex $2000 - Local CU Visa Classic $1600 - Cap 1 $1650 - Amex Delta Gold $1000 - Chase Freedom Unlimited $500 + several store cards.
