Hi coconut! Mine is from Concord as well. And for the same reasons, my parents broke the lease and it was for paint, carpets and the fee supposedly. The original amount was $2,000 something and the letter I got this weekend said $144,000. The strangest part for me was it dropped off my reports months ago and now its back. (I was sending them letters.)
I'll be watching these posts with interest, since I rent from these sleazeballs.
I'm buying and will be out of there within 7 months to a year, and I can't wait. The reasons they suck are legion.
I will definitely be doing a walkthrough of my place with a video recorder, with a representative from the company, before I move out.
(I'm in Michigan.)
Call them and ask why the big jump. Get it verified. Sounds like they're trying to line their pockets. Do what you have to. Don't let this hit your reports. I think it would be harder removing it than trying to fight it now. Can't imagine such a jump? What do they want you to purchase the whole house?
There are many free agencies that will help you. Google them and write to them asap!
I think a DV letter is in order. As for the amount of interest and fees that would lead to that kind of a jump, I can't imagine this would be legal anywhere. You may want to seek some third party assistance. Perhaps the Florida AG needs to be made aware of this CA.
