yea i think ill go that route also ... i was thinking having my letter notarized also .... how do you notarize a check though... or am i reading your statement wrong..

No as far as I am aware you can only notarize the letter.

Actually most states have rules negating restsrictive endorsements.

+1, I would never give a CA a personal check. No way in hell they are getting the routing/bank account number!!!!!

I understand that, but it looks like I am lucky in that I can't seem to find anything to that effect in California. But would the restrictive endorsement have to hold up in both California and South Dakota, or just in my home state?
