Best Way to Handle Recent Charge-Off/Repo

Financed vehicle in 2006.  I got sick and household income decreased.  Car repo'ed in February 2008 and sold at auction June 2008.  CRA reporting $16,281 written off and $12,191 past due as of February 2009.  Original amount was $17,903.

We never received a NOI (Notice of Intent), but we did receive a deficiency notice in June 2008 (via regular mail), stating that we owe $10k after the sale of the car-much different from the above figures.

Can't afford to PIF.

What would you recommend?

If you can not PIF and SOL has not expired, I wouldn't wave no bright colored flags around getting their attention.
