Can I cite HIPPA violation for an unpaid account from 5 years ago?

I had an Brain MRI done in 2007 and didnt know that I had a $1000. deductible for said service.

No one explained my responsibility prior to services being rendered and now

the radiology place that performed my MRI is reporting on my credit reports.

Is that legal? I thought they couldnt report unpaid medical bills.

Please help. I trying to close on my house within the next few months.

Thanks.

Medical collections can and do show on credit reports. However once they are paid there is a HIPpA process that you can follow to get them removed.

Usually they are marked as "medical" or something similar on your CR.

HIPAA provides a permissible purpose for record retention (obviously, providing it meets the other sanitation of sensitive information requirements of HIPAA) while the medical debt is still under collection.  Use of HIPAA to require deletion of those prior records does not come into effect until the permissible purpose is gone by way of payment of the debt.
