Dear Customer Relations Manager,
Back in July of 2000 I’d received my Capital One card. Initially, my payments were on time and things were good, but then things went downhill. I found myself in a bad financial situation. Although I was working, I was simply not making the money it took to pay all my bills as I should. I’d moved out of a bad domestic situation and didn’t have the financial help that I used to have.
Unfortunately, over time, my Capital One payments were sporadic at best. Finally in late 2003, I called the phone # on my bill. *the one that mentions “are you having difficulty paying your bill”? Yeah, that was me, for sure. The woman on the phone was extremely helpful and sympathetic to what I was going through. We set up payments to begin in January 2004, and by December that year, my balance had been paid in full. I was so happy to finally get this paid up. It left me with a sense of accomplishment and besides, I have never been one to just let a bill go unpaid, and have been on time with everything since those days in 2004!
Fast-forward to today. In less than one month, I will be celebrating my 50th birthday. I have had many friends ask me “what do you want?” I always answer “I want to refinance my home!” I am doing all I can to make this dream possible, but to be totally honest with you, the charge off status on this account may be my biggest roadblock. I know I was wrong all those years ago, but once I could take care of things financially, I called you to pay this up. It’s not as though I’m asking for this negative status to be removed while I still owe you money…that would be wrong. Instead, I am asking for you to do me this favor.
I know this is long, but I truly wanted you to understand how very important this is to me. I have worked so hard for the last 5 or so years to get to where I am today, all on my own, with no help from anyone. And I have come to understand that sometimes, you just have to ask for a little help when you need it.
I want to thank you for your time today. I hope that you can find it in your heart, and your computer!, to help me with this and remove the collection status and associated negative comments, with the Credit Reporting Agencies.
Sincerely,
BungalowMo

Very good point! My letter is still on my 'puter, in case I wanted to make some changes. I think I might just call them. Try & talk to a real person & see what they might be able to do for me. As it stands, on MyFICO reports, this account is giving me a total of 18 of those nasty red flags! It's killing me!!!

Okay, Bungalow, I'd disagree there ... personally, I think you'd have more luck with a human being LISTENING to you rather than just reading your static words on a page.
Why? If they have a question or a point they want clarified, you're there already, ready to answer them (rather than writing another letter -- or worse, their not bothering to ask the question)! Plus, if you're sincere, I think they'd be able to hear it in your voice. And (not telling you to lie or varnish the truth, mind you) if you TALK to them, you can gauge what info they want to hear ... will the CSR be sympathetic about that operation/illness you had? Or your spouse losing their job? (not saying that's what happened to YOU, just examples!!).
See what I mean?
But then, I'm southern, Darlin' ... talkin' (and keepin' people as captive audiences) is what we do best!!!
