Collection agency not licensed in my state. Next steps?

I made a thread some days back in regards to a medical collection that occurred in another state.  I checked the license registry in NYC and the agency is not listed.  Doesn't this mean that they are not legally allowed to collect a debt from me?

What are my options?  What can I do next?

It is possible they are listed under a parent company.  Sometimes it is not as easy as just putting in their name.

Interesting.  How do I go about finding out whether this is the case?

Some state debt collection practices statutes directly address and require licensing, while others dont.

Contact your state agency that regulates the licensing of debt collectors.  It's their job and expertise, and they can give sound advice on how to deal with any violation.

The FDCPA alone does not address licensing of debt collectors.  That is reserved to the states.

Ok.  I plan on filing a complaint with both.  What do I do after that?  Do I send any letters?  Contact the OC (the hospital)?

Is the CA on your CR?

I would contact the OC and ask to pay it.

The CA not licensed only has to assign it to another who is.  Once it's paid they can't.
