Collection reset

If a debt is due to fall off soon, but suddenly got a judgement against it, will that reset it back to 7 years?

Re: Collection reset

A reported collection has an exclusion date based only on the DOFD.

It must be excluded no later than 7 years plus 180 days (and is normally excluded at approx 7 years) from the the DOFD.

The addiion of a judgment will not reset or extend the exclusion date of the collection.

However, the judgment, if picked up by the CRA and entered into their files, will have its own exclusion date, which will be 7 years from date of entry of the judgment.

The original reporting of the collection will not change, but the Judgment itself is treated as a separate derog and will remain for 7 years from the time it was filed.
