Once a credit card has been closed can the credit card company keep adding late fees on the past due balance even though the account is closed? Should the balance stay the same unless moved to a third party collection and fees are added that way?

Closing a credit card terminates ability of the consumer to add new charges, and thus increase the debt.

It does not terminate continued delinquency or any additional charges, interest, or fees that are otherwise authorized under your account agreement.
