Re: DV question

I would suggest looking at it this way.  Is the debt paid or unpaid, and if paid, whjen?

As long as you have an unpaid debt, it is owed to someone until paid.

Unpaid debt is carte blanche for reporting of activities to collect on its payment up until it is legally satisfied.

If the debt originated with an OC who has now charged it off, and sold it to a debt collector, the debt is still unpaid.

By the act of selling the unpaid debt to a debt collector, the OC must then declare a $0 balance owed to them in your CR..

But that is not the same as a $0 balance owed on the debt.

The new owner of the debt, the debt collector, may then choose to report the debt owed to them to a CRA, in the form of a collection account,  thus reinserting the claim for debt into your CR.  Thus adding a CA on top of the CO reporting.

If the debt is still under active collection activity by any party, that means that they disagree that the debt has been paid.

If you feel that it has been paid, you can dispute any reporting of activity posted to your CR after its payment, by way of a dispute through the CRA under FCRA 611(a), or by way of direct dispute with the party who posted the disputed reporting after payment under FCRA 623(a)(8).  In either event, a showing of proof of payment prior to the date of their reporting will be an essential part of your dispute.
