OP - going into the gym to speak to someone in billing with an apologetic, "I am sorry - I think there has been a misunderstanding that I would like to clear up." would be more productive than being angry about the situation.

 

It sounds like your goal is to owe nothing and have no collections/no collection activity.

 

It sounds like your compromise would be to pay one month of gym fees.

 

It sounds like the gym would like 3 or 4 months of gym fees.

 

You can nicely explain that you understood that the gym had cancelled your membership effective (insert date) and don't understand why they are billing you for the months after the membership HAD been cancelled.  ASK the person to help you understand the misunderstanding and clear up the account.

 

MOST people, when asked for more information, will provide more information.

 

MOST people will work with someone to clear up an misunderstanding IF the person is nice and gentle.  If you go in with an angry vibe, you probably won't reach the ending or the compromise you want.
