I believe if you file a police report and send them a copy of the report they will remove it. If you call the CRA"S during normal business hours you may be able to fax it directly to some-one with-out having to wait to see if they received it in the mail. I am not 100 percent sure this is how it works and hopefully some-one else will chime in knowing what to do.

Thanks JM-AM!! I just got back from post office. I sent to GE Money Bank (CMRRR) a dispute letter (thanks RobertEG!!), copies of my credit report, and copies of the identity theft police report. The detective held me up about two weeks since he felt I should have filed in another state (lived in RI at the time of the incident). I will take your excellent advice and get a fax number to send the same information to them. Perhaps I can get this resolved sooner that way....As always, thank you! Cape Codder

UPDATE:

 

I called GEMB/PayPal yesterday and I was told that my case has been reviewed and they've ruled in my favor!  Woohoo!!  However, just the way they said it ticks me off.  How about an APOLOGY for not doing their job verifying my identity before issuing a credit card?  Where's their 'mea culpa'? I digress.  I'm just thrilled to hear that this noose around my neck will be removed from my credit file!

 

I was told by them that they don't report to the credit bureaus until 2/8/11, thus another nearly month long wait for this ordeal to be over.  I was told that I will get something in writing and to save it FOREVER as it is my only proof.  Trust me, I will make 10 copies of it and strategically place it in many locations!

 

It still hasn't sunk in and my FICO scores won't be out of the gutter until the information is updated to the credit bureaus.  I can't get pre-approved for a house yet, but I have allowed myself to start searching for houses online and getting a feel for the market.  I'm itching to get on with my life!

 

My advice to anyone in my situation.....be PERSISTENT!! They had a record of each call I made and I either called daily or every two days for a month.  The customer service reps had to tell me to hold on so they could read all the notes on my file.  Yes, I was the proverbial 'squeaky wheel' and I kept on calling.  Most service reps were OK, several were downright rude and should be reported...but, there was one, named Rhonda, who was an absolute sweetheart! She was SO helpful and even chit-chatted a bit with me.  She said that 80% of the fraud cases they see are from relatives! I never thought it would be so high.  At one point I told her I was thinking of paying this debt, $816, just to move forward with my life but she said NO, to keep plugging along.  Yesterday, it was fate that she was the customer service rep that answered to give me the good news.  I immediately asked for her supervisor's name and address and mailed off an "attaboy letter" to her boss.  She went above and beyond and it felt good to have someone on the other line who wasn't treating me like pond scum.

 

I will post an update when the three bureaus drop this tradeline and then I can close out this thread.

The nightmare continues!

 

2/8/11 came and went with no updates to the credit bureaus.I even pulled my EQ and TU scores, no change. I call the cc compay and the 3 bureaus who each point fingers at the other guy. Meanwhile, I've identified a bank owned home that is perfect for me and my daughter.  I put in an offer.  Well, offer can't be accepted until I'm pre-qualified and I can't be pre-qualified with the fraudulent account still reporting.  I'm in panic mode and on the phone for hours with EQ, TU and EX.  They have RELUCTANTLY convinced me to dispute this account (AGAIN) even though I am EXTREMELY nervous about disputing while trying to buy a house.  I faxed the letter from the cc company saying they have removed the fraudulent account and the police report to all 3 bureaus.  Now I wait, AGAIN, and I feel like I'm starting at square one.  One bureau (EX I think) said that they might be able to finish in 24 hours.  I'm not holding my breath.

 

Ironically, I get a notification from ScoreWatch tonight telling me that my score has increased...Woohoo!! It's up to 679 which is more than enough for FHA.  But this is because the fraud acct is in dispute, thus not being factored into my score.  That 679 is staring at me, taunting me, because we all know that I can't get pre-qualified with an active dispute....aaaarghhh!!!

 

Any guesses as to when this nightmare might be over and the fraud acct finally removed?  What a mess Smiley Happy
