First steps?

My DH's credit is completely shot! Was even denied secured cc from cap1! Lots of baddies on cr. Most are old. Would it be better to do a secured loan through our CU?, which they said we could do. or pay off baddies? Thanks so much

How old are they? How many does he have on his CR? Can you add him to your cc account as AU (something that reports to his CR too Discover has started to do that, Amex does it).

Are the recent ones due to lack of money? If so,  I wouldn't concentrate on getting the score back up but rather sort out finances first. Also how did the electric company charge 12K? Am I missing something. All except last one have ways to go before so if you can add him as your AU may be that will help him just a little bit. I have seen people recommend OpenSky which doesn't check your credit but gives your 200 secured credit limit so you can look at that. I would avoid Credit One & First Premier but  that's just my opinion

Re: First steps?

The electric company was due to sheer avoidance on both are parts! we had a protection from shut off in place due to my son being on a nebulizer for asthma. The electric is now in my name.

Should we 1st try and apply for skyone? or pay some of the baddies? if baddies, where do we start?  thank you Darwin!!

Re: First steps?

Apply for SkyOne. And tackle the ones that are being reportedly monthly. Before committing to pay for anything see if they will do PFD that one you make a payment and they close a TL and his reports look better.

Once he has a CC showing good payment history for 6 months or so, try CapOne prequalify page. It is pretty solid and he may even qualify for some unsecured card at that point.

A lot of folks, including myself, like Credit Check Total:

..

When you order your $1 3-Bureau Credit Report & FICO® Scores, you will begin your 7-day trial membership in CreditCheck® Total. If you don't cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period**, you will be billed $29.95 for each month that you continue your membership. You may cancel your trial membership anytime within the trial period without charge.

..

I cancelled my membership, and in the process of doing so, CCT offered me something like 50% for gosh I can't remember how many years.  BUT, it was a long long time.  I then jumped on that offer ;-)
