Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

Also, maybe you should get the Discover secured. It will likely graduate in a year which is the same time the collection falls off. You should be able to get the card with COs as long as you don't have a BK reporting.

Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

Speak of the devil... I got this today.  I think I have gotten this before. I think. So how would I ask the CRA for an early exclusion? Just dispute it and ask in the notes?

I thought about that since I have all the inquiries now anyway. I worry about the APR I would likely get stuck with though. Get 24% now or maybe half that in a year. Decisions...

Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

This is the issue with collections. A paid collection isn't always better than an unpaid one. Their mere presence is the problem. I would only paid if doing a PFD. Otherwise, put that money into a Discover secured and let it age off. Even with a high APR, if you don't keep a balance, it doesn't really matter. You can always request a reduction later. At this point, ONLY pay if they will delete it. That's what I would do. Paying it without deleting it will not change your score at this point.

Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

I never thought about that. I can put that into a secured card. I wonder if these inquiries will keep me from getting the secured. Heck, at this point it doesn't matter. I am waiting a year anyway, right?

Exactly! Either way you have a year to wait. You can spend that year paying for something you didn't do that is going to go away anyway or spend that year building a relationship with Discover.

Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

I finally took the time to dispute this. As stated I mentioned the starting date of debt, the fact that I had never made any payments and therefor the DOFD is inaccurate and I asked for it to be excluded. I never mentioned "dispute" nor did I say it wasnt mine. I took the time to dispute a couple of other items as well. I got this done with TU and EQFX but Experian won’t let me dispute it online.

Called Experian last night and after an hour on the phone, all items in question  have been put to investigation. Fingers crossed.

Re: How should I handle this bad debt?

I lodged my disputes with all 3 CRA'S a few days ago. I am already starting to see changes on my reports but my scores havent updated yet. EXP went from 13 lates on 5 accounts to 5 lates on 3 accounts. Most were my school loans and from years ago. I hope my one baddie gets removed. That should make a good difference.
