In April 2010, due to an out-of-the-blue interest rate increase and random previously undisclosed fees, I requested that HSBC close my credit card account. I paid the account in full through a money order (borrowed $ from my mom and that's what she sent). I never received anything from them again. Then in May 2011 I received a notice from Portfolio Recovery that the account had been placed with them for collection in the amount of $442. I sent a DV, and all they sent back was something telling me that HSBC had sent them an electronic copy of my payment history and there were no uncredited payments. I pulled my reports and saw that HSBC was also listed as a charge-off account in the amount of $441. I disputed with HSBC and Portfolio, and they both insisted the accounts were valid.
Because I was an idiot, I did not save the money order stub, and have no "proof" that the account was PIF.
I have filed disputes with EX, EQ, and TU, and all have come back verified twice each.
I don't know where to go from here!
The dispute with the CRAs might not get you anywhere. It is a billing issue you are having from HSBC. You will have to contact them.
Unfortunately, I've spoken with HSBC several times, and now with Capital One, and they keep insisting it's correct, which is why I filed the dispute, but they keep verifying as well.
I would have them mail you statements proving where this balance came from.
