Any collection account will count as a derogatory mark on your credit report. Paid or unpaid it is a serious derogatory that carries negative weight until the day it falls off seven years after the first delinquency. I assume by key derogatory you are probably referring to a credit report you may have gotten. Websites like Myfico will point out things that are most reducing your score, in this case, your collection accounts.
