I have a charge off from Kohls from last year and called to pay in full but was told Mer Adj B was collecting and they would only report what they say. Called them to work out pay for delete and they said they would only show PIF or Settle.
What would you do next? Would it be worth it to send a PFD to the OC? Or pay in full to Mer Adj B and start the GW letters to the OC for removal? I pretty much just want this thing off as I am trying my hardest to buy a house next year.
Thanks for all your help!

I would be sending a DV to the CA and if that succeeds in removing them from your CRs then I would immediately be on the phone to Kohls offering to settle in full before they send it back to another CA, If the CA validates the debt then you will have to work out a PFD with them and if they wont do it and you do pay it off then you would begin GW letters to both the CA & the OC. GW letters always go to the entity that is reporting and sometimes that can be 2 or 3 different entities for the same debt.
There are two possibilities as to why the OC referred you to the debt collector.
1. The debt was sold to them, and thus the OC can no longer accept any payment, or
2. The OC prefers all payments be made via the debt collector, which is often a contract term is collection assignment agreements.
You can certainly send them a PFD, but they may apparently decline.
Sencing a DV to the debt collector is an option, but not necessarily the best at this point.
If timely, it will impose a cease collectiion bar on the debt collector, which will temporarily block their reporting, but they can validate at any time and report.
Or they could wait to validate for an extended period, in which case you will be in limbo.
How soon do you need to settle the debt, assure the debt collector wont report, or obtain deletion of the CO?
Best path may be to send a pay for not reporting offer to the debt collector, and then pursue a request for GW deletion of the reported CO by the OC.
