Hello FICO friends! Just returned from post office and mailing my first GW letter! Don't know if it is going to work or not, but the pleasure I feel from doing this has already put a spring in my step GW letter is to Shell/Citibank for a single 30 day late back in 8/05 on a 7 year account with otherwise prefect history. Best outcome would be for them to change that one month, but from reading here I'm learning that they might remove entire TL. Shouldn't affect AAoA since I have older TL's in good standing. The letter written was a mixture of letters posted here, with a little sprinkling of 'poetic license' from me. Will keep y'all posted and thanks for all the info on these forums!

Good luck in your effort to GW. In future letters you might make it clear that you are only asking for deletion of the negative items associated with the account and are not asking for deletion of the entire TL.

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they've made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem".
Congratulations!
I sent 3 Pre-HIPAA letters (one to each CRA) and 2 GW letters out yesterday (Chase & Cap1 - each for a 30-day late). It felt so good to finally be taking the first steps... I had emailed Chase a couple weeks ago and was denied, but had some nice posters here encourage me not to give up, so.... trying again.
Good luck! ...and of course, let us know how it works out for you.
Hello to all and a special thank you to marinevietvet and susan for your advice and support!
I'm shocked at their speed but I returned home from work to find the following letter from Citicorp (Shell):

Woohoo!! Can you believe I put this request in the mail only 14 days ago? I expected it to take months, during the entire time I'd be wondering if the letter even was received and turned over to the correct department. I am disappointed that the entire TL was removed as it was a 7 year timeframe but I have many older accounts in good standing. I will remember what marinevietvet said about asking them to only delete the negative item, not the whole TL.
Now if I could only get a fraudelent credit card off my CR as easy! That is a much larger battle and covered in a different thread...
Onward and upwards my friends!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
Congrats
Very good job
Good Luck

That's all water under the proverbial bridge. You'll know better next time.
Congratulations though on your success.

Thanks SO much JM-AM!!
You've been my biggest coach/supporter here on myfico regarding my struggles and I sincerely thank you
I'm a bit embarrassed as I went a bit over-the-top but here's my sob story letter that worked like a charm. As I said in the original post, it's a mixture of many GW letters I saw here at myfico with some 'poetic license' sprinkled in by me!

Dear Sir or Madam:
I was a happy Shell customer for 7 years, from 2000 to 2007, and was very pleased with the relationship I had with Shell. During those 7 years, I was 30 days late once, on the payment due in August of 2005. I am writing to ask if you would consider a "goodwill" adjustment to your reporting of this item with the three credit bureaus. There were many extenuating circumstances during that time in 2005 and I inadvertantly was late with the payment while managing to juggle full-time motherhood, full-time career, full-time wife, and full-time book keeper of the families finances. I know this is no excuse and I certainly was 30 days as reported, I am simply asking this favor of Shell.
Beginning with a move in 2009, I am now commuting, round-trip, about 140 miles per day. I stop to fill my car's gas tank quite often at a Shell station and because of our prior good relationship, and the convenience of being able to use a Shell charge at your stations, I am seriously considering re-applying.
Because of my otherwise exceptional payment history over those 7 years, I would appreciate it greatly if you would consider removing the negative payment from my credit report. I'm not justifying why the payment was late, but rather trying to explain that the late payment is not a good indicator of my actual credit worthiness. I hope that Shell is willing to work with me on erasing this mark from my credit reports.
I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
(CapeCodder)

Marinevietvet - I see that you snuck in a congratulations reply while composing this message...THANK YOU for all your help and advice!!!
CapeCodder, that is, in my opinion, one of the best GW letters I have seen.
Appeal first to wanting to keep you as a valued future customer, then passingly admit to the old, prior problem, but then show them that it was a distant anomoly, and that your current situation has overcome the reasons for the prior late payment anomoly. I think you hit every important part of a great good-will letter right on the head of the nail!
I think your letter was right on point on what a GW should say! Probably the reason for its acceptance!
Great job!
It is a common mistake to confuse deletion of individual pieces of information reported under an account with deletion of the entire account.
You only lost its age of accounts in your credit scoring by total deletion of the account, which is minor, Deletion of the derog was much more significant.
Now if I could only get a fraudelent credit card off my CR as easy! That is a much larger battle and covered in a different thread...

Yeah, may still have a battle, but unlke GW letters, you have means under the law to get fraudulent reporting out of your CR.
That may be an even easier issue to deal with.
You have the ability to secure an "identity theft report" under FCRA 603(q) by simply filing a police report with your local police department.
Then, with that in hand, get it blocked from your CR under FCRA 605B. But, yes, that is a topic for a different thread.
Thanks RobertEG!
BTW I am crafting a letter to PayPal tonight and sending it CMRRR tomorrow using the template you posted here at myfico. I finally got the Case # for the identity theft report but will keep those updates in that other thread. Just wanted to thank you for all your help!!
UPDATE on GW letter. Just received a scorewatch update that my EQ has gone up 7 points from 624 to 631. I didn't pull credit but I'm assuming that it is the 30 day late that was removed with a GW letter that caused the increase.
I will confirm when I pull my EQ report, but for now, I am guessing that is the reason. So, if any of you are wondering how much of an impact one 30 day late from 5 years ago could affect one's score, I'm thinking about 7 points. Obviously everyone's situation is different but this may give a good ballpark amount.
