Also, what's the DOFD on the medical collections?  If you can get those removed, that should help your score too.

AMEX might be a stretch until you're solidly in the 660s and beyond.

I think that depends on which AMEX they would apply for.

Thanks jjking I'm about to buy a used car out right so I'm going to apply for a couple of cards and try the prequal sites like medicgrrl suggested and just start the building process

Medicgrrl can u give me an example when u say to have 3 cards with one reporting a low balance ?

Like do u mean 2 cards I never use and one card that I use very little

Or

2 cards with moderate use and 1 card with very little use ?

2 card that report a zero balance, and 1 card that reports less than 9% of that card's limit. Usually the balance that is on the statement is what gets reported.

crazy update I applied for my first card through NFCU and they approved me with a $24k line of credit 15.4% which is on the high side I'm assuming but wow I'm in disbelief
