OC has no record of debt CA is reporting...now what?

CA (West Bay Acquisitions) is reporting that I owe $106 from OC. Called OC today as I don't recognize or remember this and they said that they have no record of this debt and that I would have to call CA to get more information. What do I do with the information CA provides for me if I still don't recognize it? Can a CA report on something that an OC has no record of? Just a little info about OC...they have not been sold or merged with other companies, so I doubt important info would have gotten lost in that type of transition. I'm assuming, from information I've gathered on this forum, that a DV letter would be the best course of action here, right? Some input would be really helpful as I don't really know much about this kind of stuff. Thanks!

Yes, DV to CA is your first step.  Keep it simple.   Don't use your actual signature, just type your name.

Here's an example of one I've used (picked up from this forum).

Bottom Feeders Unlimited

123 Anystreet

Anytown, CA

12345

Account number: xxxxxxxxxxx

To whom it may concern:

I pulled my credit bureau report, and I discovered that you claim I owe you a debt. Under FDCPA 809 send me validation of this debt.

Sincerely,

electra

Thank you electra! I've also read some contradicting information (I'm most likely just misinterpreting it, I'm sure) about whether or not they need to respond. Is the CA required to respond within a timeframe? What can I expect?

Only in TX is a CA required to answer a DV, sent at any time, within a 30 day time frame.

There is no timeline for them to respond at all.  If they don't, they cannot continue collection activity.

Does stopping collection activity also mean that they stop reporting?

Yes it does.  Until they validate, reporting is considered collection activity.

That does not mean they have to delete any prior reporting.   It can remain on your CR.
