The CB's make errors all the time! In this case it's in your favor! The honest thing to do is dispute it and have it removed but that's up to you
That's one heck of a backdate!!!!!
Do you have an American Express and they just screwed up the date, or do you not have an Amex at all?
The reason I'm asking is that if they delete it completely, it's gonna screw with your AAoA, which will lower your score. If you have an Amex and they just adjust the date, depending on what the correct date is, it may not be that big a deal.
I would go ahead and dispute it, even though it'll ding you. I would do that because I'm paranoid about things coming back to bite me at the most inopportune time.

Yeah I never had an Amex card, how much will this ding my score if it gets corrected
It's hard to say. But having a CC on your report with an 1988 open date makes for one heck of an AAoA. Chances are, your first card is dated somewhere around what 2010 or so? So your real AAoA could be more like 2-3 yrs after the correction, which is significantly lower than the 10-12 or so years it might be now.
All of this is pure speculation since I don't know what your AAoA is or what the ages of your other accounts are.
Maybe someone in your fam had one and added you as an AU? Is it possible that happened and you forgot?
I've asked my close family members and they don't recall ever putting me as an AU on any of their cards, I' also don't remember ever having any AMEX card, hm time to look into more of my papers!
