Satander USA - Extra Payments...

I will try to keep this short.

I got a loan with Satander in Feb of this year, my score was horrible - 480.

7-8 months later I am not really happy with the car and am thinking about trading it in, or making extra payments just to pay it off early.

I know that I will take a HUGE HUGE negative equity hit if I trade it in.

So I called Satander about making extra payments. THe rep told me that I was not able to have additional payments applied to the principle. Any extra payments made will just move my due date out - if I make  extra payments, my due it's 6 months later. After I talked with him more, he did say that extra payments could be applied to the principle *once a year* and a supervisor's approval would be required. The rep suggested to save up as much money as possible and making once large annual payment.

I am looking for advice.

Should I just continue to pay extra and hope it works out? I can pay 3 months worth of payments monthly and not effect my quality of life. If I do that, the loan would almost be paid off in 12 months. Do you think Satander would just continue to take it's payment out monthly for the term of the loan? Or would they see that the note was paid and send me the title? LOL. The rep said he didn't know since he had never heard of anyone doing this.

Or should I just take the hit, and try to trade it in? I'm probably looking at being upside down $6K-$7K. On the upside I have went from a 480 to a 621 FICO since Feb - and I know I have plenty of room for improvement. The very few dealers I talked with said a 621 should not be a problem to finance. I had a ton of inquiries over a 2 month period when I bought the car in Feb.

Any thoughts?

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

I accidentally posted this in the rebuilding forum - would a mod be kind enough to move it to the Auto Loans forum?

My apologies...

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

Let them put it where they want.  Move payments up... Did the same thing with Santander.   They compound interest daily, so it doesn't matter.

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

I was thinking along the same lines - just keep the car. Pay extra. Document all my payments and let them figure it out.

I don't need 2 cars, and I know it's gonna be a big hit for me if I trade it - don't really need $7K financed back in on a new car loan (that I might even be able to get, LOL)

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

Santander does the following - according to them

They apply all paymetns to any fees (late fees or what not) first. Then any interest that has compounded (which it does daily) and then principle.

I've gotten quite a few different opinions on things from them and it really mattered who I talked to each time. Same question got 3 different answers none of which ended up being the RIGHT answer.

Do you have your promisary note or your copy of the contract. I'd get that out and read it over and over again. It has to say in there somewhere how payments are applied.

In the end if they apply any over payments to future payments all it means is that when they calcuate interest its calculated on the amount for that month at that time, not what the actual principle is - they do this to guarentee them to make $x in interest no matter HOW quickly (or long) you pay off the loan you could pay it off in 1 day, but in the end you still paid the same amount of interest.

They legally can not hold the title once the loan is paid off doesn't matter WHAT state your in - if they don't have a lein on the vehicle (which they can't once the car is paid off) they can't withold the title.

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

It's interesting you bring up the loan paperwork. I never got a copy of anything I signed (or any loan documents for that matter), even though I asked for it repeatedly before I took possession of the vehicle.

Eventually I was told I'd get it in the mail and that never happened either.

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

I had originally brought mine through Citi, then Santander bought all their accounts.  I was way ahead on my payments on 2 vehicles but then I had improved my CR enough that I refinanced through my local bank.

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

I guess I'm confusing myself by wondering what they'll do with the extra payments if you trade the vehicle in or refi? Send a refund check? Applying the payments to the loan?

Re: Satander USA - Extra Payments...

Oh they're applying it to the loan, the loan is going down by that amount.  They are trying to stretch it out so they get the most interest.

Yup.

Technically they are, they are just moving your next due by date further and further away.

A refinance would payoff the entire balance due (plus any interest that accrued since the last payment).

We pay my wife's santander car loan weekly. her next due date is like 5 months away however her balance shows exactly what we owe. Basically if we lost our jobs today and couldn't pay a dime, it would buy us 5 months to come up with the next payment since we technically paid those 5 months already. We pay it weekly so that we end up paying an extra month's payment throughout the year without having to come up with a full months payment plus I work right next to a branch so I do it every friday on my lunch break. (its free and they can never claim they didn't get your check like they did when we would mail them).
