TMobile Collection with the wrong open date?

I have a collection from TMobile from over a year ago, but on my newest report pull it shows an entirely new open date of January of this year (2013).  The correct open date should be a year 2012.  Does anyone know if I can dispute this, or is it worth my while to just pay it off with the new more recent date (the more recent date is affecting my score adversely).

Is the OC or the CA reporting?

If it is the CA, the open date is the date they acquired the debt and not the date the debt was opened with the OC.
