Since you mention this as a telecomm debt, and particularly a land-line as opposed to a cell phone, I suggest you check out the federal statute of limitations on telecomm-related debt.  I believe it is two years.  You obligation for the debt may have long expired. 

While SOL expiration wont help you regarding credit reporting and scoring, should you decide not to pay them, you might have a basis to tell them to take a hike.
