Start by pulling your credit reports for you and your husband from here, https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp .
It's free every 12 months and there are no gimmicks. You have to know what you are starting with.
The advice given so far is solid. I'd start with the medical collections. Most, if not all, will accept a PFD for a settled amount. If they won't, offer a PFD for the full amount.
