really depends on the late payment number. 30? 60? 90? etc
the 90+ lates are scored highly negative and will impact you for almost the full 7 years. 30/60 i hear are usually a year or two before their weight is small. However during any manual review , any late looks bad in some lenders eyes.
when the FICO score report is listing negative items, it lists them in an order of most damaging to least damaging. Therefore, If you have a late payment from last month on your report, it could be listed as a recent baddie being number 1 on the list of negative things. It will always list 3 negative things though, so as that baddie ages and becomes a year, then something else on your report might have a greater negative impact than that baddie, so it might move down to number 2 on the list. After more years, say 3, then that baddie is not having as much of an impact and it is possible that it will move down to number 3 on the list.... as long as there is nothing else that is hurting your score even more that can take its place in the list.
