Who are these people?

I just received a letter in the mail from an RCS Recovery Services stating that I owe The 500 Group, LP over $30K!!!!!! I've never heard of The 500 Group, LP nor do I owe anyone but Sallie Mae that much money, and they are current! So, why would they be trying to collect from me when nothing on my credit report looks like this! I'm in panic mode because I close on my house in 17 days!

Just send them a DV via CMRRR...sounds like a scam.   They should disappear then.

Thank you for the response! I will definitely DV them! I sure hope they don't do anything stupid to ruin my closing on a new home!

+1 on sending a DV.  In that DV, be sure to additionally request the name of the original creditor, as they only need to provide the name of the current creditor unless specifically requested.  You may need that additional info tor any possible identification of the alleged debt.

Additionally, was their "letter" a complete dunning notice, including advisement of your DV rights?

If not, you might consider sending a complaint to the FTC, getting them involved in at least contacting the debt collector.
