What the Hell? I got a FICO alert because my credit card balances were 0 this month. Seriously? Why? I'm so frick'n sick of these scoring systems.
As far as I know, FICO calculates your score based on the percentage of utilization ratio (total balance compared to the total credit limit). If there's no balance then there's nothing for FICO to rely on. I've been reading up a lot here, you gotta keep some balances on your credit cards. Don't just zero down on them Hopefully someone more knoledgeable can join the discussion.
You actualy do not want a $0 Balance - a $0 Balance also means a 0% Utilization - if you don't "utilize" your credit there is no data for the agencies to use to determine your credit risk. It may sound odd, but it's actually logical - if you use your credit and pay it off it shows the agencies that you can use credit responsibly. If you don't use your credit at all, well, they have no idea if you are responsible with credit becuase there is no data and in the case of utilization no data is not good data.
A lot of people will say many different things on utilization but let's just take it straight from the horse's mouth:
"As for a zero balance, FICO consumer affairs manager Barry Paperno says, "The idea here is the lower, the better, in terms of the utilization percentage, but something is better than nothing." How low should you go? In a recent interview, FICO spokesman Craig Watts said, "If your utilization is 10 percent or lower, you're in great shape as far as utilization goes.""
utilization is not a dollar amount - it is a percentage. As well, there are two areas of Utilization - individual per card and aggragate (average of all cards). What is your utilization for all individual cards and what is your overall aggragate utilization?
It's best to carry the utilization on one card, rather than multiple cards for maximization purposes.
IF you have other CC its OK to paid this one off. For sample if you have 3 CC, paid 2 off and leave 1 with small balance 9% or less then you are good.
