Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forums, and have spent quite a bit of time reading through them this weekend. I've learned so much!! Thank you!
I'm in the process of trying to clean up my credit and my current FICO is 620-ish.
About two weeks ago I received a letter from a collections on an old account. I keep finding conflicting information about credit card debt SOL in my state (Utah), but Suze Orman's webpage reports it as six years (other things I've read say 4). Does anyone know?
Anyway, I'm trying to decide how to proceed from here.
The OC reported on all three bureaus, and doesn't list a $0 balance, but gives a "charged off" date.
The CA has reported to TU and EQ
CA is reporting DOFD as 08/08
OC is reporting DOFD as 12/08
The letter I recieved from the CA says they are charging me 21% interest and their balance is double the original balance of $1598.
I know that I shouldn't contact them via phone, and I won't. But, I'm not sure how to attack this. If SOL is passed, I'm keen to sending a PFD, but online reviews of the CA report them as being very difficult to deal with, so I don't want to draw attention to myself if SOL hasn't passed, since they haven't been very aggressive so far.
The letter they sent simply reads,
Dear XXXXX
Attempts to contact you were unsuccessful. Please contact us within 24 hrs at (***)***-**** regarding your account.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
COLLECTOR (It actually says "collector") (***)***-****
Interest will be charged at 21.00%
This communication is from a debt collector. This is an attempt to collect a debt, any information obtained will be used for that purpose.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Have you tried sending them a DV letter? If the balance and date are wrong - maybe the debtor is wrong too? (i.e. they mixed you up with some other person) .
That notice looks a little fishy -- too.
21% interest from a CA? Wow.... Well, I'd send them a PFD of 30% of the original balance or so.
