being added as a co applicant

Hey all...as i've read...being an authorized user may or may not affect your credit score but being a co applicant can help your credit score. I know you become responsible for the debt. My mother in law is willing to add my husband to her Chase credit card that is in good standing. Does my husband have to be approved by them or can my mil just add whoever she wants?

OP, search through the posts here, and find out what cards on hand do report AUs.
