rebuilding credit for pending mortgage

Hi,

I have a middle mortgage fico score of 632.  I got pre-approved for a conventional mortgage on a new construction home.  I'm locked in my current rate for 8 months, however if my credit improves and rates are the same or lower, then I can rescore and get a better rate.  The home will take 7-8 months to build, and I'd like to boost my score in the next 5-6 months.  I have some derogs that I'm working on cleaning up.  My question is on the credit side.  I'm an authorized user on my wifes credit card, but other then that I have no open current store or credit cards.  I'm thinking I would benefit from opening a couple of store and/or secured credit cards so that I have some credit lines and then 6 months worth of good payments and extremely low UTI.  Am I on the right track, or do you think that would be counter productive?

P.S. I would do cards that don't require a hard pull on my credit report.

Thanks!
