Does American Express Just Send Invitations Randomly?

I recieved an invitation to apply for American Express Platinum Card. I'm just a student and am not wealthy for this type of card. I'm sure the benefits will outweigh the annual fee but this is a card for big spenders.

Get 50,000 rewards point which is worth $500.00 in gift cards when you spend $5,000 in three months.

The plat isn't for big spenders, per se. The rewards are terrible (1 point per dollar).

You don't need a high income to apply either.

There are definitely better signup offers, like the 100k/3k offer, or a 50k/3k offer, or a 100k/5k offer.

But yes, almost all credit card companies send invitations to apply totally randomly.

I am pretty sure they dont just send random invitations to anyone otherwise people with bad credit would be getting invitations in the mail. Perhaps they send it to people with credit profiles that they see as at least good enough.
