I've broken both of my little pinkie toes. ( not a very graceful person) Other than taping them there's not much they'll do for you. I will say that it hurts like heck.
The spouse said it was very painful.
One of the kids had left a bookbag in the hall and it was dark(because I hadn't replaced the hall light after it burned out), she caught the nylon strap with her little toe and when she went to take her step, the strap yanked her toe instead of giving because her other foot was on the bookbag.
Needless to say, the light got changed the next day.
At least her story is a bit more classy than mine. I was running from a bee and slammed my foot into the cement steps up to my trailer I had years ago. At least I didn't get stung. LOL

Uh huh -- Okay, you've made me share my story.
It was July 4th and I was trying to get the keg out of the back of my tiny Mitsubishi. My boyfriend was late and I was tired of it sitting in the sun. So I went for it. And it went for my big toe.
At the time I was working pt at a hospital. I snagged an ER doc in the hallway to ask if there was anything I could do other than stop dropping kegs on my toes. Nope, tape it, ice it, elevate it.
At least it was a GREAT party.

Sounds like the broken toe was worth it.
Stick your toe in the ice surrounding the keg?

Enough beer and you'd have forgotten the pain for a little time. Now that had to hurt, kegs are heavy.
Ouch. Don't waste your $$$ going to the ER. I've had many broken toes and theres nothing they will do. Stock up on ibuprofen. Tape the sore toe to a good toe to limit movement.
Try to stay off of that foot for a while because walking will make that toe want to move.
Pop two pain relievers, prop yourself up on the sofa and watch a movie, then another movie.
@llecs wrote:Thanks for the tips guys! Pain isn't bad at all. Could be worse, I guess. Swelling has picked up a little, but it is one of the busiest days of the month at the office today.
@Scamp wrote:llecs, do they have any walk-in clinics, either stand-alone 'urgent care' kinds of places or something like some of the drug stores' in-store clinics for non-emergencies, near you? I've never used the latter, but my SIL did when one of her kids had a cold or something, and I too often seem to end up at the local walk-in urgent care clinic when I really need to see someone same-day and my doc can't squeeze me in.
The urgent care clinics can still be a bit of a wait (I think I sat for an hour or 2, last time I went after a head-on collision with another cyclist that wrenched/bruised my shoulder something wicked), but they're not as bad that way as ER's nor as expensive, and often they can dispense drugs on-site for you.
Other than the doctor (who really can't do much without an x-ray) and the hospital, the only other option are urgent care centers. There's a few, but the wait is long. A little OT, but I don't trust them. I had appendicitis, and two different urgent care centers diagnosed my symptoms as resulting from a bad cold or flu. Since then, I've stayed away.
I used to work with MDs as a postdoc at Yale Medical School (I was one of the PHDs in a research group that was about 2/3 MDs), now I'm in R&D at a big pharmaceutical company (been at this company for 10 years). Anyway, I heard a LOT of conversations among young MDs, and their slang for urgent care clinics is "doc-in-the-box." The main problem with such places is, they tend to attract MDs who prefer regular hours and limited responsibilities to the prestige, longer hours, higher pay, and greater responsibilities they would have at a hospital or in private practice, so you don't tend to get world-class physicians at a doc-in-the-box place, you tend to get the ones with limited ambition.

...My version of this one was going to my family doctor years ago with some very bad bug or other, only to find him out of the office and his newly-graduated son on duty. Dr. Jr. told me I had 'chest flu', sent me home.
2 days later, I was worse, called Dr. Sr. and told him; he sent me to the ER for chest X-rays. I ended up being admitted that same day with advanced double viral pneumonia. I was in the hospital for a week and durned near died.
Some years ago a cousin married a man from Ghana (which quickly revealed how many of my liberal Wisconsin relatives were much more racist than I had realized, but that's another very long and messy story) and shortly after a visit to his family in Africa came down with fever and chills. Her small-town Wisconsin doctor who had probably not heard the word "malaria" since medical school thought it was just an ordinary flu so nothing was done until my mother took it upon herself to call a specialist in tropical diseases. Even if the guy had never seen a case of malaria, shouldn't it have at least occurred to him that a person who gets sick right after visiting Africa might have caught something over there and maybe should see a doctor who knows about such things!?!?
Once she got to a doctor with a clue treatment was successful, she's still happily married to the fellow from Ghana, and their kids are both doing well in college.

Once in graduate school I fell down the stairs of the BioSci building and cracked my tailbone. I never bothered going to a doctor because I knew there was nothing they could do for me. I was OK standing up but it hurt like heck to sit on it for the next six weeks or so; fortunately a friend suggested I get a ring cushion which I carried everywhere so I could sit down...
Ahh, if you're a righty, the left foot is your plant foot, you can get past that pain and kick a field goal. If you are a lefty and kick soccer-style, that toe won't come in contact with the ball anyway. It will only hurt AFTER you kick the ball, so suck it up and win one for the Gipper. J/K

Yes the last poster is right....in general they won't do anything for a broken toe. I would go buy some Iburophen and take that for a while. It will help reduce any swelling and ease the pain. If you are in bad enough pain you could always get one of those attractive open toe bootie shoes. No field goal kicking for you for awhile.
