I still have one.  Can't part with it for sentimental purposes, though I can't find my tapes.  I think it requires something like 8 or 12 D batteries.

A couple of weeks ago I was on the way down to my sisters for my BIL's suprise birthday party, she called and asked if I would mind stopping and getting a "big a$$ speaker" thing for her IPOD.  I had visions of the old 3 foot by 6 speaker....I bought an awesome Bose (i kept it !) which is maybe, one square foot, with great sound.  I felt old day also !  (and anytime I walk in an electronics store).  Big a$$ speaker just doesn't have the same meaning (although I did use that precised term in the store).
