I had a promo which requires I make four stays within a certain period of time to earn gold status back for 2016 and 2017. The terms define stay as follows:
A 'stay' is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.
Does this mean I have to stay two nights each time to get a stay or is staying one night sufficient? Also, since I was gold last year they will let me buy back my status with points. If I took that option how long would I have gold status for? Looking to hear from people who are actually familiar with marriott promos. Thanks.
My take on it is, a 4 night stay. 4 in a row.

No, that is not it. Four nights in a row is clearly one stay. I asked on another board and was told that I only need to stay one night and it will count as a stay. So I need four individual stays meaning I can switch between properties from one night to the nextand accomplish it within four days. I just can't stay at the same exact property two nights in a row.
